Thanks to Classroom20.com which is a social network for people interested in Web 2.0 and collaborative technologies in education, I met Dan Klumper, a very enthusiastic Social Studies teacher who teaches 6th grade students at Brandon Vally Middle School in South Dakota, USA. He offered to build an international connection using our blogs. I shared this idea with my students and we listed some questions to ask our new friends in Brandon Valley and Brandon Valley students did the same. Then I posted my students’ questions to our class blog (http://tedistanbul5thgraders2009.edublogs.org) and Dan posted their questions to their class blog (http://waterforsixthgrade.blogspot.com/) for each others’ students to respond to. That was a great experience and fun! Dan has been building international connections with other countries as well and now I’m planning to build a connection with another country.
The world that we live in is multicultural. Appreciation for diversity is one of the gifts that we can give to our students to help them develop. This appreciation will need to include a curiosity about others’ cultures, a tolerance of differences and a desire to learn about different cultures and traditions.
Thank you Classroom 2.0, nice to meet you Brandon Valley:))
