Well, the 43rd IATEFL conference is over. It was a fabulous event. I’m back in Turkey with great ideas. I want to mention a few sessions I attended which were worth seeing.

Gavin Dudeney’s session called ”DSL Illiterates- The Teacher as Dumb Terminal”. In his session, he tried to raise teachers’ awareness by asking these questions: After the supposed technology revolution of the past 15 years, why are most teachers at best still false beginners in Digital as a Second Language? and “How does one acquire fluency in order to engage the “native speakers” of today?” His presentation’s audio recording and slides are on Cardiff Online.

“The English Teacher’s Guide to Computer Games and Learning” by Kyle Mawer was another session that I liked. He talked about the importance of using computer games sensibly and gave very useful ideas. Check out his Wiki!

Ken Wilson, Jamie Keddie and Hans Mol presented great activities from their new books in their workshop called “Creative Classroom Ideas Using Drama, Music, Images” to stimulate and energise students of all ages and at all levels. Check out Jamie Keddie’s blog!

In their session “Teaching Unplugged: dogme comes of age”, Scott Thornbury and Luke Meddings described “Dogme in ELT” and explained their motive for writing the book “Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching”. Check out these links: What dogme feels like (HLT Magazine), Teaching Unplugged

The last session I attended was Gordon Lewis’s “Making the Most of Technology”. He talked about the innovative applications of common technology which most teachers are familiar with and can use with confidence. His session was inspiring for the teachers who are willing to integrate technology into their lessons.

Finally, I’d like to say that IATEFL conference was a very big event for me in terms of meeting colleagues from different countries, making connections and getting back home full of great ideas!

Well, my duty as a reporter has finished:) In my next post, I’d like to evaluate my own session in the light of the feedback I received from the participants.

  1. Hi ya Burcu,

What fun looking at your pictures – really enjoyed the smilebox and seeing everyone at the IATEFL. The pictures and presentation really give a ‘feel’ about the event.

    Thanks for sharing!
