There are great online videos that you can use in your classes. However finding a good video online does not always mean that it is suitable to use in the classroom. You may want to customize or download it depending on your students’ needs or the type of activity you are planning.
I want to share three, free and very easy-to-use online tools that will enable you to:
- add subtitles to online videos (YouTube, Google Video, MySpace Video, Dailymotion and Blip.tv)
- download online videos (YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Break, Google video, MySpace, Revver, Blip.tv, 5min, etc.)
- convert YouTube videos into mp3s.
You have found a great video for your students and you want to add subtitles to it… Try:
Overstream: It is a free service by which you can customize an online video (YouTube, Google videos, etc.) by adding your own comments or subtitles in any language. First you create an account. In order to add subtitles to an online video, you need the video URL . After you paste the video URL, the video appears on the user interface and then you can start adding subtitles. Overstream keeps your video on its server and you have the chance to embed it to your blog posts. I suggest you to see the online tutorials before getting started.

You need to download an online video because you don’t have Internet connection in the classroom… Try:
Savevid: (Thanks to Jamie Keddie for sharing this tool) Savevid.com is a tool which gives you the ability to download videos from video sharing sites like YouTube, Google Videos and Metacafe. You don’t need to create an account. Just go to Savevid.com, paste the video URL and click download. You can download videos in flv or mp4 format. In order to play videos in flv format, you need to download an flv player and iTunes or QuickTime to play mp4 files. I usually use Savevid.com to download the YouTube videos that I want to use on my class blog and then upload them on Edublogs.tv because we don’t have any access problems for Edublogs.tv at school. (You need to create an account on Edublogs.tv to upload videos.)

You just want to use the audio of a YouTube video in the classroom…. Try:
Dirpy: (Thanks to @ozge for sharing this tool) It is a free tool to convert Youtube videos to mp3 files. You don’t need to create an account. Just paste the video URL into the window and click download.
